GreenSign certificate for the ‘Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen’ in its anniversary year

Aachen’s Grand Hotel once again certified by GreenSign / Sustainability as part of its core strategy

The “Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen” has once again been awarded the GreenSign certificate in recognition of its sustainable practices. The certification comes in a special year: on 8 June 2026, the Grand Hotel, situated next to Aachen’s Kurpark, celebrated its 110th anniversary. At the same time, key modernisation works were completed at the start of the year, through which asset manager ‘Jagdfeld Real Estate’ has further developed the hotel.

Aachen, 2 July 2026. The “Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen” has once again been awarded GreenSign certification. The certificate confirms that the hotel is managed sustainably in ecological, economic and social terms, in accordance with the requirements of the GreenSign Hotel Standard. The audit was the first recertification audit and assessed ten core areas comprising 133 criteria.

“You cannot reinvent a historic hotel. It must be understood, maintained and developed further. The GreenSign certification validates this approach. For us, it is operational proof that quality and responsibility go hand in hand,” says Alexander Stiller, hotel manager of the Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen, expressing his delight at the latest accolade.

For the Grand Hotel in Aachen, this comes at a time when the hotel’s history and future are closely intertwined. In 2026, the “Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen” will celebrate its 110th anniversary (see https://www.parkhotel-quellenhof.de/110-jahre-parkhotel-quellenhof-aachen#ausden-aufzeichnungen). Since 1916, the hotel on Monheimsallee has shaped the character of the imperial city. Today, it faces a challenge shared by many historic hotels: how can a building that defines the city be preserved in its original form, modernised and steered into the future in terms of its operations?

Sustainability in existing buildings
The GreenSign certification highlights that sustainability at the ‘Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen’ comprises a whole range of measures. Among other things, management, energy, water, waste, procurement, mobility, social responsibility and economic development were reviewed and assessed.

For a building dating from 1916, the particular focus lies on the existing structure. The most sustainable decision is not always to build from scratch, but rather to consciously develop the existing structure. This is precisely the approach the “Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen” has been pursuing since 2020.

Sustainable modernisation as part of the strategy
As asset manager, “Jagdfeld Real Estate” has played a key role in shaping the development of the building and has invested approximately 8 million euros since 2020. In 2023, the public areas around the Kaminhalle, the Teehalle, selected conference rooms and the third floor were comprehensively modernised. The focus was on a resource-efficient refurbishment. The next phase followed at the end of 2025. A total of 98 rooms and suites on the first and second floors were modernised whilst the hotel remained open. New carpets, curtains, materials and colour schemes are combined with refurbished furniture and bathrooms. In addition, technical areas were further developed, including the kitchen, cold stores, grease separators, building automation, motion detectors and the barrier system. Six colour schemes, inspired by European culture, continue the new room design on the first and second floors.

GreenSign as operational proof of sustainability
GreenSign is particularly relevant to the hotel industry because it takes a holistic view of operations. The certification covers not only environmental criteria but also social and economic aspects. These include, amongst other things, regional supply chains, resource conservation, mobility, staff development and transparent management processes.

Positioning in the European market
This certification is the latest chapter in the Quellenhof’s success story: since November 2025, the hotel has been part of the European hotel collection ‘Quality Lodgings’. The collection brings together independent hotels across several European countries and is synonymous with distinctive establishments, each with its own history, culinary excellence and design ethos.

Furthermore, the “Parkhotel Quellenhof Aachen” has once again been named among the “101 Best Hotels in Germany”. In the “Luxury City Hotel” category, the Quellenhof ranks amongst Germany’s leading city hotels.

The Grand Hotel, situated next to Aachen’s Kurpark, thus embodies several developments that are relevant to the industry: the revitalisation of a historic property, the strengthening of an independent hotel brand, investment in guest rooms and technology, and a proven track record of sustainable management.
