Private university expands its Berlin campus to almost 11,700 m²/ Model example of a
successful transformation from a former hotel into a modern university
Düren/ Berlin, December 10, 2025. Asset manager Jagdfeld Real Estate has now refurbished 2,000 m² of new space for its tenant “IU Internationale Hochschule” and let it on a new and long-term lease. This means that the Berlin campus of the private university of applied sciences is growing again – this time by 20% from around 9,700 m² to around 11,700 m².
“In an extensive 14-month conversion and planning phase, we have now also been able to convert former office space on the 3rd and 4th floors of ‘PLAZA Frankfurter Allee’ into modern training and seminar rooms that enable up to 600 people to learn and work in a flexible and contemporary way,” says Stefan Schulz, Head of Technical Property Management Germany at Jagdfeld Real Estate. The work included drywall construction, new floor and wall surfaces, doors, sanitary facilities and the installation of modern ventilation, heating and air conditioning technology. Fire protection, accessibility and technical equipment were also brought up to date. A particular challenge was the modern cooling technology, which was not installed on the roof as usual, but in four rooms of the newly converted areas.
“As Germany’s largest university, we are delighted to be able to meet the increasing demand for our Berlin location and to have a partner in Jagdfeld Real Estate who is committed to professionally implementing our location requirements,” explained Petra Barlen-Flackmann, Asset Manager of IU Internationale Hochschule, at yesterday’s key handover ceremony. The new premises can already be used for the current winter semester.
Prime example of a successful transformation from a former hotel into a modern university
As early as 2020, Jagdfeld Real Estate began to create tailor-made capacities for the IU Internationale Hochschule in the PLAZA Frankfurter Allee from space that was previously a hotel – a prime example of a successful transformation. “The great success of the IU in our building is also proof of our strength in realizing our customers’ requirements flexibly and competently. And our possibilities are still not exhausted,” emphasizes “Jagdfeld Real Estate” manager Schulz.
